Being a retained firefighter
A Retained firefighter is responsible to the Officer in Charge of the fire station. He/she must comply with all departmental instructions regarding station duties, drills and emergency incident operations.
Retained Firefighters do many things for their community. These include, but are not limited to:
- Extinguishing fires
- Engaging in fire prevention activities, including community education programs
- Taking effective action at incidents involving rescue and hazardous material spillages
Other major activities involve:
- Responding to incidents when available and maintain a satisfactory attendance record consistent with departmental policy.
- Attending all Station drills, Superintendents drills and Regional Training Officers drills (approximately twelve to twenty per year).
- Being proficient in the use and safe handling of all equipment
- Performing all duties assigned by the Captain / Commander
- Participating in community based fire prevention, community education and hazmat programs
- Being conversant with the regulations and comply with directions
