The six day training program

Upon joining the NSW Fire Brigades as a retained firefighter, recruits are required to undergo a six day training program.

The first four days training will be at one of the NSW Fire Brigades' training centres. Our training centres are located at Albion Park, Deniliquin, Wellington, Armidale and Alexandria.

Recruits learn about hazards associated with chemical fires, dust expositions, electricity, radioactive materials, biological hazards and hazards associated with bushfires, trains and aircraft.

Practical training involves the use of various pieces of equipment used for fire fighting and culminates with teams using this equipment in real fire situations.

Recruits receive instruction in the use and application of Personal Protective equipment which is issued to all new appointees.

Recruits also learn how to wear breathing apparatus and will use this knowledge in a heated smoke environment to do search and rescue for simulated victims.

Four to six weeks after the initial four days training recruits are required to attend the final two days of training. This consists of compartment fire behaviour training, rescue training and hazardous material training. All training is undertaken with qualified training instructors.

During both the four and two day training sessions, accommodation and all meals are provided by the NSW Fire Brigades.
